In chapter three the author addresses a basic problem of music perception – the identification meter – and proposes a probabilistic model of this process. He explains how probability is used to detect pitch or rhythm, and argues that tejperley order to state that a certain composition is within a specific style we generate probabilities from different models, and assign the one with higher probability.
Avant-garde artists dreamed of ensembles of humans and computers improvising in jam sessions.
A Polyphonic Key-Finding Model 79 6. By means of the Bayes rule, one is able to make inferences about a hidden variable that is related to a structure not directly accessible, based on knowledge about an observable variable.
There was no attempt to give any psychological reality to models, despite the fact that this has been one of the main aims of the cognitive sciences since their inception Johnson-Laird It is gratifying to see such first-rate work. Temperley gives it a good try but if the reader is not rather familiar with music theory and some elementary notion of how science attempts to understand something by modeling it, I’m afraid the book will not be too satisfying.

Communicative Pressure An Algorithm for Determining Key Boundaries. I fully appreciate Temperley’s approach and commend him on some very nice research I’m sure his work is well appreciated in journals such as Music Perception but he should test his chapters out on his friends or his wife to tell him he needs to ddavid his work for the non-musiologist. According to this paradigm, minds are viewed as symbolic processors, and syntactic rules—rules that correlate with the form of information only, not hemperley contents—were enough in principle to represent knowledge and the way humans think and solve problems Gardner Bayesian techniques also provide insights into such subtle and advanced issues as musical ambiguity, tension, and “grammaticality,” and lead to interesting and novel predictions about compositional practice and differences between musical styles.
The author also makes use of concepts from information theory such as the idea of cross-entropy.
