I will admit that Patty and Walter were both interesting characters with all the supporting cast being all sorts of caricatures and serving as props to the main duo.

The previously unnamed lake is now called the Canterbridge Estates Lake, after a new residential development is built across the water from Walter’s house. In fact, their only complaint seemed to be that there frnazen no likeable characters in the book, that they all seemed petty and kind of horrible. There is no school for parenting. This book almost killed me. It’s no big secret that Franzen isn’t particularly fond of humanity, but if he doesn’t care about his characters, why should I?


Freedom received general acclaim from book critics, particularly for its writing and characterization. Walter has left his old environmental job to work with a rich man with ties to the coal industry, and as the kids leave for college, the parents are off to D. And I almost was. However, as I got deeper into Freedomand we started getting the history and alternate view points, I started to sympathize with most of the characters.
