Their trip, which ends in disaster and fire, is a brilliant tragicomedy thanks to the various insanities of the patients, among whom is a delusional man who greatly over-estimates his own importance and a nymphomaniac nun who tricks everyone—even the other patients—into sleeping with her.
Saer handles the sad plight of the mentally ill in the 19th century with sympathy as he describes their illnesses which are little understood in that time period. On the contrary, the former cabin-boy turned religious hermit then strolling actor retains an Indian vocabulary that treats ‘being’ and ‘seeming’ as synonymous.
Real is given the task of going to Santa Fe to collect five of the patients that will be treated in the clinic. Saer’s works have been translated into several languages. When they set out it is winter and the constant cold and damp makes everyone miserable.

In the yeara first installment of his previously unpublished working notebooks sevla edited and published as “Papeles de trabajo” by Seix Barral in Argentina. The back of the book certainly had some hype. The other is a young man who repeats the same motions with his hands and seems to be suffering with some type of an obsessive compulsive disorder.
The narrator of this manuscript is Dr. I read it in Spanish even though I don’t speak Spanish too well, I don’t know if an English translation is available but its worth the read.
