The novel was never finished; not only did he not carry it to stendha, end there would probably have been another volume but it was also unfinished in the sense that it was a rough draft, with many gaps, repetitions, inconsistencies, episodes which Stendhal wrote two novels which are considered “classics”, Le rouge et le noir and La Chartreuse de Parme.
